John Wallace Crawford (1847–1917) was a journalist and a civilian scout during the Indian Wars, where he carried communications over long distances and once delivered a bottle of whiskey to Buffalo Bill Cody during a campaign. During the Sioux Wars, he also witnessed the Battle of Slim Buttes and the destruction of Chief American Horse’s village by the US Army, though he didn’t talk about it much after the fact. In the 1890s, he became an entertainer, mining his experiences to give popular lectures on the west, Native Americans, and temperance. He also published poetry, short stories, and plays.

Tuesday Tips - Floating Hands

I use this a lot when storyboarding a first pass of a sequence. Placing hands in the right, most appealing position can be tricky. In order to create a clear silhouette for the hands, I often draw them “floating in the air”. Then, using my general knowledge of anatomy, I just “fill in the arms”. This way I can create a much more expressive and clear pose than if I was just radiating out of the torso. That’s when structure and anatomy can get in the way of a clear message. And hands carry a lot of meaning, so I want to make them as clear as possible  for my audience to see them.
I would say the same applies to life drawing. Since they often don’t carry the body weight (legs most often do), I feel like i can take the freedom of changing their position slightly to make a better visual statement.

Considering that hands are much higher up on the visual hierarchy than arms are, this makes a lot of sense! It’s a really simple idea, but I want to adopt this because I think it’ll make a rather big impact on my poses and gestures. Thanks Griz and Norm!

White Oaks was a gold rush boom town famous for its outlaws, prostitutes, and lawyers. It was frequented by major figures of the “Wild West” including Billy the Kid and Dirty Dave but declined when it was bypassed by the railroad and the mines were played out. Today, it is a ghost town, though you can still stop for a drink at the No Scum Allowed Saloon.
