This unusual photograph from July 1970, shows a Swedish police officer from Södertälje wearing his department’s latest bulletproof vest and ballistic helmet. The officer is armed with an unloaded Carl Gustav m/45 submachine gun. He is kneeling behind the cover of a wall and the long vest is covering his legs. The almost medieval-looking steel helmet and visor, the Huvudskydd m/69, has a narrow vision slit. The photograph’s caption notes that the equipment in total weighed a hefty 20.1kg (44.31lbs). Also worthy of note are the officer’s tactical sandals.
The Swedish military adopted the 9x19mm Carl Gustav m/45 in the late 1940s and was widely exported. The simple blowback submachine gun was rugged and reliable remaining in service for over 50 years. The Swedish Polisen (police) adopted a semi-automatic only variant, the m/45BE, some of these were later adapted to have a folding stock with a removable cheek rest to allow it to be used with helmets.
