John Browning’s Contemporaries: The Guns of T.C. Johnson

This is the first in what will, hopefully, be a series of articles on the lesser known contemporaries of John Browning. Browning is undoubtedly America’s most iconic gun designer but the period in which he was active (roughly 1880-1920) was one of the most prolific and rapidly evolving times in firearms design.

In this article we look at the career and designs of Thomas Crossley Johnson, a talented draftsman and designer who spent his fifty year career at Winchester working for a time with Browning before later becoming Winchester’s chief designer in 1907.

Today many of Browning’s contemporaries are largely unknown and this series will hopefully shed some light on their designs and influence of firearms history. The article can be found on The Firearm Blog, here!
