Milt Kahl gave the final look to all deer characters, including adolescent Bambi. He ended up animating most of his personality scenes, including the section where Bambi meets Feline as an adult. As usual, the anatomy in his drawings feels rock solid while offering possibilities for unrealistic, even cartoony animation. Milt’s animation of Bambi following Feline through the clouds has nothing to do with realistic deer motion, but it interprets instead the dreamlike state of falling in love.

In Action: Hi-Standard Model B

In the photograph featured above members of US Navy and Royal Navy take part in a friendly pistol shooting competition on the deck of a US Landing Craft on its way to Tokyo, c.1945. The pistol being used is a High Standard .22.

Carl Swebilius established the The High Standard Manufacturing Company in 1932, and when war broke out in 1939, High Standard began exporting Model B pistols to Britain. Following the US’ entry into the war the US War Department purchased High Standard’s entire inventory regardless of model. In order to meet demand High Standard developed new simpler and faster to produce model. The Model HD became the most manufactured with 34,000 made by the end of the war.

While a portion of these were siphoned off for covert uses with SOE and OSS, the vast majority were used for training purposes with the services using the .22LR as cheaper and low recoiling introduction to pistol shooting.

The pistol featured in the photograph above appears to be an earlier High Standard Model B with what appears to be a 5-inch barrel. The pistols are characterised by their steep grip angle and recoiling breech block. These fed from a 10-round, single stack magazine and used a simple blowback action.
